ATTENTION NON-RESIDENT SNOWMOBILERS
Snowmobiles bearing Wisconsin registration are not required to have a
non-resident trail pass, even if the owner is from out of state. A 2 year
Wisconsin registration is $30, compared to 2 trail passes at $18. Due to
the formula used to transfer gas tax revenue to the state snowmobile fund,
about twice as much money is generated with a 2 year registration as is with
2 trail passes. The state snowmobile fund is where the money comes from for
grooming and trail maintenance. By having Wisconsin registration instead of
a trail pass, you save $3/yr and contribute more money to the state fund.
It is perfectly legal to have Wisconsin registration on your snowmobile in
addition to your home state's registration. You do not need a Wisconsin
address; your home address can be used for a Wisconsin registration.
Once you have a Wisconsin registration, it can be renewed online at the
DNR website. Wisconsin registration applications can be obtained at any
DNR office, at any dealer who sells snowmobiles in Wisconsin, and at many
dealers out of state near the Wisconsin border.

MADISON - Owners of approximately 104,000 snowmobiles looking to renew their
registration will be among the first to have the opportunity to try out a
new Online Recreational Vehicle Registration Center for Wisconsin.
The online service now allows owners of snowmobiles, boats and all-terrain
vehicles (ATVs) to renew their existing registration 24 hours a day, seven
days a week with the Department of Natural Resources via the Internet
through state of Wisconsin Web site.
"Our customers have been asking for this service," said Rita Harnack, chief
of the DNR Registrations and Permits section. "While at this point the
service is for renewals only, our ultimate goal is make this renewal Web
site the foundation for all recreational vehicle transactions. As more work
is completed, customers will eventually be able to register new vehicles in
addition to renewing their current registration."
This DNR Web site is the latest in customer-friendly and efficient offerings
from DNR aimed at those who not only enjoy life in the great outdoors, but
who also surf the Web. Registration pages can be accessed through any of the
following Internet addresses: Snowmobile's
Master CardŽ or VisaŽ credit cards may be used to pay renewal fees. An
additional $1 fee will be charged for renewals over the Internet that will
help support the costs for this service. Any expired recreational vehicle
can be renewed no matter when it expired. Decals and registration
certificates are processed and mailed within seven days.
"A real incentive for using the new service besides convenience is that
customers may print a validated receipt after completing their online
registration renewal," says Harnack. "Having that receipt in hand means you
may legally operate your recreational vehicle while waiting for registration
documents to arrive in the mail. "While renewal of snowmobiles and ATV's
remains a fast and efficient process when done through the mail with a
renewal coupon, the internet service provides a "right now" service from the
convenience of your personal computer". DNR Service Centers and designated
agents also provide registration renewal validation services that allow immediate operation.
DNR processes about 500,000 renewal transactions each year for owners of
Wisconsin-registered Snowmobiles, Boats, and ATVs. Snowmobiles and ATVs
registrations are valid for two years, while Boats are valid for three
years. There has been a 36 percent increase in the number of ATVs registered
since 2000, bringing the number of registrations in 2002 to approximately
176,000. DNR already offers other recreational services via the internet,
including the sale of hunting and fishing licenses, application for special
hunting permits, the ability to submit an address update or check preference
standing for permit drawings. Last year, DNR processed nearly 200,000
license and permit transactions via the Internet.
